Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc. to Host USA Swimming and Community Health Fair at 61st Annual Western Regional Conference in Torrance, Calif.
LOS ANGELES -- Olympic champions, a Hip-Hop legend and free health resources for the community are some of the great things in store at Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority’s 61st Western Regional Conference. The conference theme is Uniting Communities for Growth, Partnerships and Service and will take place Friday, April 19 to Sunday, April 21, 2013 at the Torrance Marriott South Bay Hotel located at 3635 Fashion Way, Torrance, CA 90503. Sorority members and affiliates from across the Western United States along with International leaders will attend.
The community is welcomed to attend the organization’s free Public Meeting on Friday, April 19, 7:30pm – 9:00pm, which will highlight how the sorority is making a difference around the world. Through Sigma Gamma Rho’s campaign with USA Swimming, SWIM 1922, 2004 Olympic silver medalist Maritza McClendon and 2012 Olympic gold medalist Jessica Hardy will speak to promote swim safety, especially for African-American youth whom have higher rates of drowning. Mrs. McClendon is the first African-American woman to place on a U.S. Olympic Swim Team. Youth are highly encouraged to attend.
Get empowered when Hip Hop icon, philanthropist and Sigma Gamma Rho member Lana “MC Lyte” Moorertakes the stage at the Public Meeting and shares inspirational words. MC Lyte is the founder of the Hip Hop Sisters Network, a nonprofit organization that promotes positive images of women of ethnic diversity. Guests will also have the opportunity to support the sorority’s clothing drive. Items will be donated to shelters in the Long Beach area. Sigma Gamma Rho is dedicated to improving the quality of life in the community. Health is one area the sorority targets. On Saturday April 20th, 2-4pm the public is invited to attend the sorority’s Health Fair and take advantage of the free information provided to better their health. Diabetes testing, HIV testing, the American Heart Association, St. Jude National Campaign to Prevent Teen Pregnancy, and a host of other resources will be on hand.
“In our commitment to the sorority’s slogan and 90-year legacy of ‘Greater Service, and Greater Progress,’ we’re excited to provide these resources and programs to the Southern California community,” said Dr. Vanessa Power Anderson, director of the Western Region.
Gamma Tau Sigma – Long Beach Alumnae Chapter is the host chapter of this wonderful event. The conference hostess is Patricia Cole-Morrow.

Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc. was founded in 1922 at Butler University in Indianapolis, Indiana. Sorors of Kappa Nu Sigma, Epsilon Phi, and Omicron Rho joined forces with The Los Angeles Sentinel, The Brotherhood Crusade, and Mothers-In-Action, at the 12th Annual Health & Family Festival. Sorors provided school-aged youth with scholastic care packages filled with tools for learning, and provided one-on-one presentations on the importance of education, especially as it pertains to higher learning. Sorors of Kappa Nu Sigma, Epsilon Phi, and Omicron Rho joined forces with The Los Angeles Sentinel, The Brotherhood Crusade, and Mothers-In-Action, at the 12th Annual Health & Family Festival. Sorors provided school-aged youth with scholastic care packages filled with tools for learning, and provided one-on-one presentations on the importance of education, especially as it pertains to higher learning. Thousands were served at this back-to-school fair which provided referrals, information, and services that addressed the physical health, nutritional health, and academic state of inner-city youth. This event featured live inspirational entertainment, 102.3 The Beat, celebrities, local politicians, and the news media. Sorors of Kappa Nu Sigma also provided assistance to other vendors, when needed, and were effective affecting change in the community.

Members of TES passed out Focused Drive Pledges to college students and focused on the importance of driving safely. We focused on the dangers of distracted driving, particularly as it related to the use of cell phones and texting, while raising awareness to minimize distractions. Also throughout the week, members of TES displayed materials in central, high-traffic locations at work and during their leisure.

Epsilon Chi Sigma Chapter--Hattie McDaniel Breast Cancer Awareness Event
On October 2, 2010, the elegant ladies of Epsilon Chi Sigma spent an afternoon hosting an inflammatory breast cancer awareness presentation to young ladies living at Camp Scudder, a Probation Camp for girls. The presenter, Soror Komman Seray McDowell, is an inflammatory breast cancer survivor of five years and the founder of Komman Seray McDowell Inflammatory Breast Cancer Foundation. Her presentation to approximately 47 young ladies between the ages of 14 to 18 years old was delivered with such enthusiasm, that many of the young ladies in attendance continued to asked questions eager to learn more. Soror McDowell spoke about the common signs and symptoms of inflammatory breast cancer such as, breast swelling, which is usually sudden with one breast becoming much larger than the other, itchy breast and breast feeling pain and warm to the touch.
Soror McDowell was introduced by Epsilon Chi Sigma Basileus, former Western Region Syntaktes, Soror La Tonya Nelson, who formerly worked at Camp Scudder. After the presentation, many of the young ladies in attendance were curious about Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority and its programs and were welcomed by the members of Epsilon Chi Sigma to browse the display table. This event was a great success and members were very pleased with the overall presentation of the day.
